IRON COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway released the following statement on the felony charges against the former clerk of the city of Viburnum in Iron County, Missouri.

"I thank Iron County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Parker for taking swift action following my audit. Public officials who violate the public's trust by using their positions to enrich themselves are on notice. Corruption will be uncovered. Last month, I worked closely with the law enforcement community to pass legislation making it easier for my office to work with local prosecutors in public corruption investigations. This case, which involves the deliberate destruction of records to conceal a crime, is a prime example of why we need this law."

Auditor Galloway released the results of the city of Viburnum audit report in early June.

More than $100,000 in potentially fraudulent activities spanning several years were identified.

Former city clerk Dana Mayberry was charged with receiving stolen property, a Class B Felony by Prosecuting Attorney Brian Parker.

In May, Auditor Galloway worked with Missouri's Prosecuting Attorneys and Sen. Bob Dixon to pass new anti-corruption measures for public officials.

Included in Senate Bill 128, the measures would allow local prosecutors to request the State Auditor to assist in forensic investigations where fraud and theft is suspected by government officials. The bill awaits the Governor's signature.
