CLEVES, OH (FOX19) -

A fuel truck driver could have caused a catastrophic situation when he overdosed behind the wheel of his running truck at a gas station, according to Village of Cleves Police.

A 911 caller spotted the driver passed out between the floor and dashboard at the BP on West State Street Wednesday.

Police Chief Rick Jones said first responders were concerned the running fuel truck could still be in gear. They had to strategically remove the driver and secure his vehicle.

The driver, later identified as Kristopher Phoenix, has worked as a fuel truck driver for 20 years, his lawyer said in court Thursday morning. The lawyer claimed Phoenix was on his lunch break taking at nap when police responded to gas the station.

A prosecuting attorney argued a high bond for Phoenix because his actions posed an "extremely dangerous situation for the public," he said.

Phoenix was bleeding from his nose and carrying needles, according to officials at the scene. Jones said he admitted to using heroin.

The running, unattended tanker posed a serious danger at the gas station. Jones said it was as if the man was "sitting on a bomb."

"This could have been catastrophic," Jones said. "You've got a large fuel truck at a gas station near a terrible intersection. All these things and a driver unconscious? Things could have been very, very bad."
