(THE MARYLAND ZOO/CNN) - The Maryland Zoo is mourning the death of its baby giraffe, Julius.

The zoo decided to humanely euthanize him Saturday.

The giraffe struggled with many health conditions since his birth in June.

Julius never learned to nurse from his mother, so the zoo staff tried teaching him to drink from a bottle.

Veterinarians even gave Julius a plasma transfusion to boost his immune system, but his condition took a turn for the worse on Friday.

The zoo is creating a special memorial wall to remember the giraffe.
