ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A Pacific man with homicidal intentions carjacked a man before leading police on a pursuit down Interstate 55 in Jefferson County Monday morning, according to police.

Police said the incident began around 9 a.m. when a vehicle ran off the road on southbound Interstate 270 and southbound Interstate 55. When a citizen approached the wrecked vehicle, the driver, 31-year-old Jerrod Kershaw of Pacific, held him at gunpoint with a shotgun and handgun and demanded his car.

After realizing that he could not drive that car's manual transmission, Kershaw allegedly held the man, along with his family, at gunpoint while carjacking another citizen’s vehicle at gunpoint.

Kershaw successfully carjacked the second victim before driving southbound onto Interstate 55 in a black 2013 Hyundai Sonata.

After getting a description of the carjacked vehicle, officers found it traveling southbound on the interstate and attempted to stop it. During the pursuit, the Festus Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department tried to stop the car using stop sticks.

Eventually, the stop sticks worked and the car stopped on the side of the interstate near Route 61.

When officers made contact with Kershaw, he reportedly exchanged gunfire with officers. The Tactical Operations Unit and the Jefferson County SWAT team were called to assist in the situation.

Skyzoom4 was over the scene as officers set up along the interstate with guns drawn shortly after the Sonata pulled to the side of the road. While overhead, Skyzoom4 captured video of a police tactical vehicle busting the windows out the Sonata car that was riddled with bullet holes. There also appeared to be a gun on the passenger seat in the vehicle.

After a couple windows were broken on the car, officials cautiously approached both sides of the vehicle, where they found Kershaw dead inside.

A St. Louis County Police cruiser was seen with four bullet holes in the front windshield following the pursuit. Police said no officers were injured during the incident.

During a news conference Monday afternoon, authorities said Kershaw was wearing a ballistic vest and had several guns in his possession during the pursuit. They also said they believe Kershaw was en route intending to kill both family members and himself.

Both directions of Interstate 55 near Route 61 in Jefferson County were closed until around 11:30 p.m. Monday.
