2nd Annual Region 8 Superstar Competition Kicks Off

July 18, 2005 – Posted at 9:52 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR -- Indian Mall was packed Monday night, not with shoppers, but with talent. Ten contestants hit the stage in the first round of the 2nd Annual Region 8 Superstar Competition.

Almost 100 people submitted demo tapes for a chance to be the next Region 8 Superstar, that number was then cut to 40, and each Monday ten singers will take the stage to perform for the crowd, the judges and Region 8.

Also, the competition is fierce.

“There is a lot of talent in this area, a lot of talent that hasn't been cultivated, so I think it's going to be tough,” said judge Audra House.

“I love to sing, and I love to compete.  I really want that thousand dollar shopping spree,” said senior contestant Amy Jarrett. Jarrett has been singing for more than a decade, and it's a sound that has it's own style.

Contestants faced off in the junior and senior divisions on Monday, and the nerves were high.

“I have loved to sing ever since I was little, and  I’ve only been in one competition so far; so I decided I would give another one a shot,” said junior contestant Chelsea Vaughn.

“I'm more excited than I am nervous; I just get so excited,” laughed Jarrett.

“The main thing is that we want to have fun; we want to give back to the community and crown the next Region 8 Superstar,” said Indian Mall Marketing director Christy Veara.

Two winners are chosen each week to move onto the finals. Even though there's a panel of judges, the contestants need your vote too.

Starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday you can log on to kait8.com and cast your vote, on which contestant you think should go to the finals to be held on August 15th.

A winner will be chosen from each division, and they'll receive a $1,000 dollar shopping spree at Indian Mall. The next round of Region 8 Superstar will be July 25th.
