NEWPORT, AR - The city of Newport has received a $1 million federal grant from the federal Economic Development Administration.
The EDA funding awarded yesterday will be used to build a new railroad spur and industrial access roads to the Jackson County Industrial Complex. The U.S. Department of Commerce said the investment could create 240 new jobs in the region and lead to $25 million in private investments.
Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Congressman Marion Berry worked with Newport and Jackson County leaders to secure the funding, and Lincoln said the local officials have been able to line up many private investors. Berry, who represents the First Congressional District, said the rail spur will open job opportunities the region would have missed otherwise.
