JPD: Level 3 sex offender found living too close to park

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A homeless Level 3 sex offender won't have to worry about housing for a while after police say he admitted to being too close to a playground.

Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Wednesday to charge 34-year-old Travis Blunt with registered offender living near a school/day care. If convicted of the Class D felony, Blunt could be sentenced to 6 years in prison and fined as much as $10,000.

Court records show Blunt was convicted in 2001 of first-degree sexual abuse and ordered to register as a Level 3 sex offender.

Because he is listed as being homeless, Blunt is required to register every 30 days with the Jonesboro Police Department on his residential status.

On Tuesday, Blunt went to the JPD to update his information and said he had been staying at The Gates apartment complex.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the complex is located less than 200 feet from the east property line of Parker Park, 1506 N. Church.

Arkansas law prohibits Level 3 offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school, day care, youth center, or public park.

Police arrested Blunt and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $5,000 cash/surety bond.
