BENTON COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

A West Tennessee man was one of the people shot and killed at a country music concert in Las Vegas.

Sonny Melton was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with his wife when a gunman opened fire on the crowd. Melton's brother-in-law confirmed Sonny died from his injuries.

"The fact that he had to go like this. It was so unexpected," Larry Waters, Melton's Uncle, said.

Melton worked at the Henry County Medical Center in Paris, Tennessee--just 15 miles from his hometown of Big Sandy, Tennessee.

He and his wife were married last year, and they were working to build a new home.

"It's just one of the things it shouldn't have happened," Waters said.

"It's just surreal; I can't believe this happened," neighbor Dwayne Culpepper said.

Friends and family said Melton's last act was one of love. They said Melton shielded his wife, taking a bullet to save her life.

"He was pushing her out of the crowd with his back to the gunman and got shot in the back," Waters said.

Melton's wife and family were not surprised by his life-saving actions. He worked as a registered nurse in the ICU at Henry County Medical Center where his wife also worked.

Melton's family said he was full of life and loved fishing, hunting, and the outdoors.

"Sonny was the kind of person that you'd want your son to grow up and be like," Water said. "You can't help but ask yourself why? How could anybody do this?"

Melton leaves behind three step children, a wife, a brother, and his parents.

The Las Vegas shooting took place as country music star Jason Aldean was performing. Authorities said the shooter, Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the crowd from a hotel room window.

Paddock was found dead in the hotel room on the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.
