As Candidate, Beebe to Absent Himself from Public Service Ads as AG

AUGUST 3, 2005 - Posted at 7:50 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - At least while he's running for governor, Arkansas attorney general Mike Beebe says he'll disappear from television and radio public service announcements made by his office.

Beebe said in a statement that although the announcements are important, he wants to avoid public criticism.  He said he hasn't done any PSAs since he announced his run for governor.

However, Beebe said if another agency asks him to appear in a PSA, he would consider it.

Beebe is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for governor next year.

Former Congressman Asa Hutchinson, seeking the Republican gubernatorial nomination, called Beebe's announcement commendable, but said he didn't understand the distinction Beebe made between PSAs paid for by the attorney general's office and those produced by another agency.
