Church provides free cars for those in need

(FOX19 NOW) (FOX19 NOW)
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

It's something you might not expect on church grounds: a repair shop.

Mechanics fixing car after car after car, all for free.

Al Duebber is the man in charge of the Wheels Transportation program at Crossroads and manages all the volunteers that work on these cars that were donated.

"We have a volunteer crew of people that come through 3 times a week to this annex garage and we assess the car for what its needs might be and we go about refurbishing it and putting it in a state of dependability which provides a solution for someone who needs a car to do life," said Duebber.

Like 21-year-old Kanzas Leak, a young girl with big responsibilities

“It was just one car in the household and everyone has jobs and me and my mom are the only two that drove," said Leak. "It was always working around each others schedules, it was just really hard.”

And now they have two vehicles, including one free of charge.

A big help to Kanzas but also her mom Kelly Renee.

“Everything would fall on me, but now she can have her own schedule i can have my own schedule," said Renee. "It’s going to work out even better now.”

And that Duebber says is really the goal.

“Just by having a dependable car the recipient to get a job, complete an education, to get back and forth to vital medical appointments, or to shuttle their children back and forth to school," said Duebber.

At this point, Wheels has given away close to 800 cars to people in the community, something they say they don't plan on slowing down on anytime soon.

The application process is pretty thorough for those who are selected for a Wheels car. The number one recipient of these vehicles are single moms.
