Legislator to Resign as Part of Plea Agreement

AUGUST 10, 2005 - Posted at 8:06 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A state representative has agreed to resign his seat in the Legislature as part of a plea agreement in a sexual misconduct case involving a teenage girl.

Representative Dwayne Dobbins of North Little Rock pleaded guilty yesterday in Pulaski County Circuit Court to misdemanor harassment.  He was sentenced to a year's probation, fined $1,000 and ordered to undergo counseling.

The 42-year-old Dobbins was arrested March 24 and charged with sexual assault.  The victim, who was 17 at the time the incident occured in September, told police Dobbins improperly touched her at his home.

Prosecutor Larry Jegley said Dobbins abused the public trust, considering his status as a legislator.
