AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Major electronics company HP is recalling thousands of laptop batteries due to a major hazard.

The electronics company is reporting that lithium-ion batteries found in some of their laptop models can pose a risk due overheating.

The batteries can overheat, causing it to melt or char the laptop and items around it.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission shows numerous consumers have reported batteries that have overheated, causing property damage and in one case injury.

In some cases, the batteries destroyed property resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage.

More than 50,000 computers across various models are a part of this recall.

A few of the affected models include:

  • HP ProBooks, both the 64x G2 & G3 series; and the 65x G2 & G3 series
  • HPx360 310 G2
  • HP Envy m6
  • HP Pavilion x360
  • HP 11
  • HP ZBook, the 17-G3, 17-G4 & Studio G3
  • and Mobile Workstations

The personal computers were sold between December of 2015 and December of 2017 at stores like Best Buy. They could also be found online at Amazon.com.

The recall also includes replacement batteries that were sold separately but in the same time period.

HP says the batteries are not replaceable by the consumer. Instead, an affected laptop has to be taken to a licensed technician who will change it out free of charge.

In the meantime, HP recommends all users make sure their laptops have been switched in to 'battery safe mode'. That will prevent the battery from overheating.

If you are unsure whether your laptop is one of the thousands with an affected battery, you can find out by visiting HP's website here.

There you can also find out more about how to enable the computer's 'battery safe mode' in order to prevent a problem.
