Inmate Stabbed to Death This Morning at East Arkansas Unit

AUGUST 15, 2005 - Posted at 12:10 p.m. CDT

BRICKEYS, AR - A state inmate delivering toilet tissue and soap to other prisoners at the East Arkansas Regional Unit was stabbed in the neck this morning, and died.

Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler says 28-year-old Brian Ricks was handing out toiletries to inmates kept in single cells when he was killed.  Prison officials allege Earnest Green used a shank made from metal, possibly from an air conditioning unit in his cell, or a light fixture, to attack Ricks.

Tyler says the 47-year-old Green is serving a life sentence for a murder conviction out of Pulaski County and has committed nearly 100 rules violations during his confinement, many of them violent.  Green will be transferred back to the maximum security prison at Varner.

Tyler says officials don't know what prompted the attack.  Green apparently just wanted to hurt someone, she says.

Ricks was serving a 15-year sentence out of Ashley County for sex crimes.
