L'ANSE, MI (WLUC/CNN) - A classroom with no desks is a new learning approach in one school.

Teachers said they hope the arrangement can help students focus better during the school day.

This is the first year L'anse second-graders are doing away with desks in their classrooms.

"We thought about what students might need or want in the classroom for, you know, helping with their behaviors and helping with their strategies to help them comprehend things," said teacher Emily Maxson.

Students still have a storage clipboard to store their belongings, and Maxson said she thinks it helps students work at their own pace.

"The kids really like it," Maxson said. "They're really kind of in tune to what places work well for them, too. If a student seems to do much better at a desk, then we have three different table options for them that are just like sitting at a desk, and so we really try to meet the needs of all the students."

Where a student sits is determined by daily behavior, and is decided at the end of each school day.

"We have a behavior system with a clip chart, and whoever is highest on the clip chart gets to choose their seat next for the next day," Maxson said. "So at the end of the day choose our seats for the next day, we start with who's highest on the clip chart and then we go down down down and then everybody will have a seat and they put their clips on the board that has the name of each seat.

"You have to move your clip to where you're sitting, and then that's where you sit for the day," Kale Cichosz

Other L'anse classrooms are considering getting rid of desks, and the response has been positive.

"I think every single parent that came into this room was blown away at how much their child enjoyed it and how much they thought it was a really good thing to try out," Maxson said.

"I do like it, 10 out of 10," Kale said.
