Virtuoso Fiddler Dies

NASHVILLE (AP)_ Fiddle virtuoso and A-list studio musician Vassar Clements has died.

Clements played on more than two-thousand albums. Artists he performed with include Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Junior, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt, the Grateful Dead, and Woody Herman.

Clements died at his home today after a battle with lung cancer, at the age of 77. His last performance was February fourth in Jamestown, New York.

He won a 2005 Grammy Award for best country instrumental performance, as a contributor to "Earl's Breakdown." The track by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also featured Clements, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs and Jerry Douglas.
