NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Region 8 News got a first look at a top-scoring medical marijuana cultivation site in Jackson County Wednesday.
There are possibly two cultivation sites coming to Region 8, one of them would be located in Newport.
According to Donald Parker, a top-scoring applicant and the registered agent for Delta Medical Cannabis Company said his facility will be located at 7301 Victory Boulevard in Newport.
The location sits across from the ASU-Newport campus.
The land is currently fenced in around barbed wire.
Jon Chadwell with Newport Economic Development Commission said Parker plans to purchase the 10 acres of land from a private person.
Parker, along with the other top applicants in the state, has seven days from Tuesday to pay the $100,000 licensing fee and the $500,000 performance bond for plans to continue forward.
Region 8 News spoke with Parker on Thursday. He said he is ecstatic about the outcome.
"We were very excited about the opportunity and how Jackson County treated us with open arms," Parker said.
Parker said elected officials and economic development professionals in Jackson County recognized the benefits this business would bring.
"For them, the economic impact will be huge," Parker said. "We anticipate employing 30 to 50 people initially and it will mean millions of dollars in the local economy in Jackson County."
Residents living in Newport are also excited about the cultivation facility possibly calling Jackson County home.
Christopher Arter, a Newport man, said he voted for the use of medical marijuana.
Though he does not use it himself, he knows people who will.
"I've seen cannabis oil do amazing things for people with seizures and things like that," Arter said. "As long as this facility is well regulated and accounted for, I'm all for it." I know it will help bring jobs to our area and boost revenue."
This week's decision was only regarding the cultivation centers, decisions on where dispensaries will be located have not been announced.
