(KAIT/NBC) - Cancer patients in California are coping with diagnosis and treatment through dance.
They're even learning from a famous teacher: choreographer and actress Debbie Allen.
Allen didn't stop inspiring dancers when her TV show stopped airing in the 1980s.
In fact, her passion for dance helps the healing process in a program called JOY, or "journey of yourself."
"Because that's what the class inspires," Allen said. "People to go deep inside themselves, pull out those things that are weighing them down."
The class meets for seven weeks at Allen's dance studio in Los Angeles.
The dancers move at their own pace, each telling a personal story through movement.
