Two Region 8 Counties to Benefit from Cancer Awareness Program

AUGUST 25, 2005 - Posted at 4:26 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A $60,000 grant from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to the state's only medical school will help pay for cancer prevention programs in two Region 8 Delta counties.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences announced that the grant was awarded to the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at UAMS.  The money will help fund programs conducted by local Cancer Councils in Mississippi and St. Francis counties in Region 8, as well as Phillips County.

The local councils have discretion over how the money will be spent on a range of community-based tobacco-related education programs, from cancer screenings to poster contests for children to raise awareness about the disease and prevention measures.
