NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A roller skating rink in Newport originally built in the 1960s is being brought back to life for some family fun.
The Epperson family, who is reopening what is now called Rock-N-Roller Rink, said they are nervous but excited to reopen the rink.
"From the time I was three until I was 16, I didn't miss a weekend skating," owner Josh Epperson said. "We traveled all over the state skating in different rinks and it's always been a dream of ours to have that."
Skating is close to Epperson's heart. His parents even met at a rink in Searcy many years ago.
"My history with skating goes back as far as I can remember. I don't remember not being able to skate. So I want to pass that passion down to the next generation," Epperson said.
That is the reason he is opening rink. He said Newport needed something for the kids to do.
"They've got to commute to Jonesboro or Searcy or to Batesville and a lot of families can't do that so we wanted to fill that niche for the community by getting a rink up and going, to fill that niche for the community," Epperson said.
The grand opening is at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
Hours are 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Price of admission is $7 per person.
