COLLEGE STATION, Texas (3/9/18) – Arkansas State senior sprinter Jaylen Bacon qualified for the 60-meter dash final while senior thrower Itamar Levi claimed Second Team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday.
Bacon, running in the second of the two heats, clocked a time of 6.64 seconds to advance. He placed fourth in the heat and advanced based on his time. Seeded sixth before competition, Bacon enters the final ranked eighth among those qualifiers. The 60-meter dash final is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
“Jaylen had to deal with a reset and a false start in the blocks tonight and wasn’t able to handle that as well as we had hoped,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. “Jaylen was ready twice, but he wasn’t as ready that third time. Credit to Jaylen though, he ran a race that gets him through to tomorrow. The key for him tomorrow will be his focus and we have a great deal of confidence in him.”
Levi earned second team All-America status with a 15th place finish in the shot put. His last throw was the best of the three attempts as he posted a mark of 17.98m (59-00.00). His first attempt reached 17.90m (58-08.75).
“Itamar was disappointed, although he went in ranked about where he finished,” Patchell said. We felt like he had a great chance to make the final today based on the other throwers, but he told me after the competition today that he would be there when we get to the outdoor championships.”
