LITTLE ROCK, AR - The federal Food and Drug Administration says it has no plans to institute a nationwide ban on the sale of basa catfish imported from Vietnam.
Arkansas Congressman Mike Ross had asked for the ban earlier this month after a prohibited antibiotic was found in some shipments of fish in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
FDA spokeswoman Kimberly Rawlings says the measures already in place should prevent any contaminated product from being imported.
The agency's decision comes amid a bitter fight between Southern states and seafood importers over wether basa is dangerous.
