JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro High School partied and celebrated in full force Tuesday, celebrating state titles won in basketball by both the boys and girls squads.
Even Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin stopped by the gymnasium to congratulate the teams on their tremendous seasons that culminated with a title.
For the Golden Hurricanes, winning state titles in basketball is nothing new, with the boys capturing back to back titles for the first time in 80 years and the girls winning two out of the last three years.
The 80-year drought without back to back titles caught Wes Swift, boys head basketball coach, by surprise.
"No, I had no idea, to be honest with you," Swift said. "When the game ended I was just so happy for this team and it wasn't until I did some interviews after the game that it was brought up to us. It had been 80 years, so I had no idea."
Here's something else that's not so familiar with the teams: this is the first time in school history both squads won the title in the same year.
"They came together and did a great job of supporting each other, of not caring who got the points and who got the accolades, they wanted this trophy and so they worked together to get that no matter who scored, no matter who did what," Jodi Christenberry, the head girls basketball coach said.
