KENNETT, MO (KAIT) -

Prosecutors released new details Thursday in the case of a 17-year-old male accused of sexually assaulting a child.

Kennett police arrested Cody James Ragland after a woman reported that he had sexually touched her daughter.

The woman said while she was bathing her daughter the child said her vagina hurt. When asked why, the child claimed Ragland had touched her “butt and middle part,” the probable cause affidavit stated.

Police then took Ragland into custody for questioning. During an interview at the Dunklin County Justice Center, where he was read his Miranda rights, Ragland reportedly said the alleged incident occurred on Sunday night.

According to the court documents, Ragland told officers he put his hand under the child’s gown and “began rubbing her private parts.”

A detective gave Ragland an anatomical diagram of a girl and asked him to circle the area he had rubbed. According to the affidavit, Ragland circled the vagina on the diagram.

“Ragland went on to state that he had inserted his pinky finger into [the child’s] vagina,” the affidavit said.

On Wednesday, a judge found probable cause to charge Ragland with statutory sodomy/attempted statutory sodomy of a person less than 14 years of age.

He’s being held in the Dunklin County Jail on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

Sgt. Mark Dennis with the police department told Region 8 News that Ragland will be charged as an adult.
