Jonesboro, AR (A-State) – The Arkansas State baseball team was able to put runners on base, but couldn’t score enough of them as Coastal Carolina completed a three-game sweep to open Sun Belt Conference play by defeating the Red Wolves 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
The Chanticleers (15-7, 3-0 SBC) opened the scoring with a two-run single by Parker Chavers in the top of the second that was hit softly to left field. However, A-State (8-8, 0-3 SBC) responded with a RBI single from Logan Andersen in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 2-1. Coastal would go on to score three unearned runs in the next two innings to move in front 5-1 and never looked back.
The visitors added single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings to take an 8-1 advantage to the bottom of the ninth. Grant Hawkins tripled home Andrew Lannon and Winston Welch to get the Red Wolves to within 8-3, but KyleMacDonald struck out on a nine-pitch at-bat to end the game.
Peyton Culberton tossed 5.1 innings for the home team and allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts against four walks. Zachary Patterson tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Tobias Johnson, along with Hawkins, led A-State with two hits apiece.
Zack Hopeck picked up the win on the mound for the Chanticleers after allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Three different relievers combined to finish the game. Chavers went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Seth Lancaster recorded two hits and three RBI to lead the CCU offense.
Arkansas state returns to action Tuesday, March 20 for the first of a two-game midweek set at Missouri. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network, while Wednesday’s contest is set for 4 p.m. and will be available on SEC Network+.
