HARDY, AR (KAIT) - The city of Hardy will soon have an indoor place for its residents to get some exercise.
The old school gym, located on School Avenue, will soon be renovated.
Mayor Jason Jackson said the construction has already begun to add a health and fitness center in the downstairs of the old building.
"We are still going to keep the top as the basketball court but we want to make it more accessible," Jackson said. "I want to see everybody start using it and get healthy and see this place come alive."
St. Bernards will be providing some of the fitness equipment like treadmills and elliptical machines.
"They've volunteered to come in every month and do some classes," Jackson said. "Some dietician and physical education classes in it."
Jackson said he wants to ensure citizens have access to things for a healthy lifestyle.
"We did a kind of study just to see how many people would be interested if we did this and we just got...everybody was happy because there's not anything in the area for people to use for any kind of gym or anything like that," Jackson said.
The renovation will cost between $30,000 and $40,000, but the mayor said taxpayer money will not be used.
The city has already secured several donations from both businesses and individuals.
