HOT SPRINGS, AR (KAIT/KARK) - Students from across Arkansas are showcasing their ideas to solve real problems in their communities at a Hot Springs conference this week.
Those projects include technology like 3D printing and virtual reality.
A student from Hot Springs World Class High School, Miles Hermann, found out flooding has been a problem in the city since the 1800s.
"One day on my way to school I saw water on the street, so I started thinking how can we get rid of that? Is it a problem," Hermann said.
So he decided to use the technology provided by EAST class, which stands for Environmental and Spatial Technology, to find a solution.
"We're going to use a retention basin system to hold back water during a storm event in a tunnel, and then we are going to pump it back into the tunnel at safe levels after the storm has ended," Hermann said.
