(KAIT/NBC) - Are you fed up with those aggravating robocalls?
A national survey found scammers cost Americans nearly $10 billion in 2016, up 60% from the year before.
Despite regulations in place to curb telemarketers, not everyone is following the rules.
Here's some advice on how you can avoid pestering phone calls and texts.
Join the Do Not Call Registry.
It won't stop telemarketers calls to faxes or business phones, but it helps.
Technology expert Mark Burgess says the registry alone won't make a difference--you have to monitor and ignore calls.
"If you do answer a true robocall, you've just acknowledged that you're a real human being and you're gonna get more calls," Burgess said.
Forward spam to 7726 free of charge to block text spammers.
You can also write down the phone number and file an FTC complaint via phone or online.
