WEST MEMPHIS, AR (KAIT/WREG) - An area city recently saw itself on a Top 10 list that most people would attempt to avoid, but officials there say they are working to make a dent in crime in the town.
According to a report from Memphis television station WREG, West Memphis was selected by Neighborhood Scout as the 10th most dangerous city in the United States, while Memphis is listed as the 9th.
The group bases its list on cities with at least 25,000 in population and uses figures from the FBI violent crime report, which looks at murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault crimes, to determine the list.
West Memphis police Capt. Joe Baker told the television station that while there is no standard for cities to put police reports into the FBI Uniform Crime Report, the numbers alone may not tell the whole story.
"If you pick and chose what you take reports on then, your UCR (Uniform Crime Report) numbers can be manipulated," Baker told WREG.
Baker also said that West Memphis has seen a drop in violent crime numbers in the past several years.
The group lists Monroe, La. has the most dangerous city in America of its size, according to the report.
