PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Residents living in the Pecan Grove neighborhood in Paragould demand more safety following a gruesome homicide.
Monday, Paragould police responded to the neighborhood and found Hunter Prejean stabbed following a fight.
His family member, Frank Prejean, is behind bars and being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.
"There was yelling and fighting everywhere," Sharon Hendershot said.
Hendershot said the fight went down right in front of her home. She was cooking, heard the noise, and went outside to find a trail of blood.
"It was very horrible, bloody, it was awful," she said. "He was running down the street after he got stabbed. A woman with them got out of the car, she just laid on the road crying and praying. She was hysterical."
Witnesses tell police they saw the suspect hit the female family member with a cane.
Residents said the neighborhood is made up of many children and elderly couples.
Over the past few years, they said crime has gone too far.
"I cannot handle stuff like this with all these kids in the neighborhood," Rene Wogoman said. "We need security here, more security, 24-hour security. I've seen two shootings over here, I don't want to get out much."
Some say they would like a heavier police presence to deter crime.
"It's not folks that stay in the community its folks that come into the community then leave the community," Halbert Jones said. "We need security that's going to watch, it's too many folks out here dying."
Their plea for safety comes so they, their children never have to witness a killing ever again.
"I don't know what I would do if this happened again," Hendershot said. "I never want to see anything like that ever again."
The suspect is being held without bond in the Greene County Jail pending a court hearing.
