JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The city of Jonesboro is hoping apartment complexes will help their residents recycle by making specific dumpsters available.

The city is in the middle of changing its recycling procedures. City workers will be collecting the recycling starting this summer, a switch from Abilities Unlimited picking it up.

“Abilities Unlimited is a nonprofit agency so they don’t have to show a profit but they need to break even and they’ve had a tough time doing that so part of the project was to find a solution to that,” said Roy Ockert, the interim chief operations officer for the city of Jonesboro. “Right now, the solution appears to be that the city will take back the collection of recyclables and then we will turn them over to Abilities or someone else.”

So, instead of using the blue bags, the city is asking residents to invest in recycling carts.

Homeowners can buy the new carts from the city for $20, but that is obviously not an option for those who live in apartments.

Instead, the city has ordered recycling dumpsters that apartment owners can buy for their complex.

Right now, they can be purchased for $400.

After June 30, that price will go up to match the city’s price for them, which is about $1,000.

“Apartments have either done blue bags or they've done something else or they've done nothing at all but we have a lot of apartment dwellers who'd like to recycle and we want them to be able to,” Ockert said.

Dumpsters can be paid for at the finance office inside city hall.
