JONESBORO, Ark. (3/31/18) – The Arkansas State baseball team couldn't solve the University of Louisiana at Lafayette starter Colten Schmidt in a 6-1 loss Saturday afternoon as the Ragin' Cajuns avoided a sweep at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro.
The Red Wolves (11-13, 3-6 SBC) were able to take two of the three games from Louisiana (12-15, 3-6 SBC) for their first series win since 2012, but just weren't able to string together enough hits off Schmidt, who went the distance for the Cajuns to improve to 2-0 on the year. The left-handed starter allowed eight hits and allowed one earned run with a career-high seven punch outs against two walks in his first career complete game.
A-State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with one out after a double by Kyle MacDonald, walk to Jeremy Brown, and single by Tobias Johnson, but two strikeouts ended the threat. The team loaded the bases again with one out in the eighth inning with a Cullen Ray single, walk by MacDonald, and single by Brown and cashed in its only run of the game on a fielder's choice by Johnson. However, a ground out ended the inning with the score 5-1 in favor of Louisiana.
The Cajuns scored single runs in the second and third innings on a wild pitch and RBI single, respectively, for an early 2-0 edge. The visitors put up three runs in the top of the fifth with two runs scoring on a double by Hunter Kasuls. They would go on to add a run in the top of the ninth to set the final at 6-1.
Peyton Culbertson took the loss for the Red Wolves after he allowed one run in two innings, but four walks were his undoing. Coulton Lee entered and allowed four runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings before Bryan Ayers threw 3.1 innings and struck out four against zero walks in a solid outing for the Vilonia, Ark., native.
