JONESBORO, Ark. (04/02/18) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team completed the first two rounds of its annual home tournament, the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate, Monday at the RidgePointe Country Club with a pair of squads leading the 14-team field and nine players among the top-25 individuals.
Led by sophomore Matthew Cole, the Red Wolves’ team in first place posted a first round score of 273, a tournament record, followed by a second-round 276 to record a 36-hole 549. The A-State squad in second place carded a first-round 282 followed by a second-round 283 to end the day with a combined 565. The teams will enter the third round separated by 16 strokes.
Third-place UT Martin currently sits 26 strokes behind Arkansas State’s leading team with a 36-hole 575, while fourth-place Oral Roberts finished with a two-round 576.
Cole led all A-State players competing in the tournament, ending the day tied for first with Southern Illinois’ Peyton Wilhoit after carding a 36-hole 137. Cole recorded a first-round 66 before posting a second-round 71.
Also playing for the A-State team in first place, senior Tanner Napier and sophomore Zan Luka Stirn are tied for fourth place after finishing the first two rounds with a 139. Napier carded a 72 and 67, a season-low single round score. Stirn completed both rounds with a first-round 69 and second-round 70.
Junior Joel Wendin is tied for eighth place after carding a first-round 66, which was tied with Cole for lowest single-round score on the day by an A-State player, before closing out the day with a second-round 74 to record a 140 total. Junior Jakub Bares sits tied for 12th place after recording a first-round 73 and second-round 68, a season low single round score for him.
Senior Andrew Huseman and sophomore Patrik Jericha, who completed both rounds tied for fourth place with a 139, led the second-place Arkansas State squad. Huseman and Jericha both posted a 71 and 68. Their second-round scores of 68 qualified as season low single-round scores for them.
Also competing for the Red Wolves team in second place, junior Trent Jones tied for 22nd with a 145 total after carding a 70 and 75. Senior Kevin Kramarski also carded a first-round 70 before closing out with a 76 to post a 146 total to tie for 25th, while sophomore Nikolaj Dahl is tied for 38th place after ending the day with a first-round 77 and second-round 72, a season low round score for him, to finish with a 36-hole 149.
The third-and-final round of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate will be played on Tuesday.
