BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - A type of training that was only offered in Germany will be available in one Region 8 community soon.
Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville has partnered with a company out of Germany.
SMS Group is a global conglomerate that builds steel mills around the world.
The high-tech specialized training in steel making and steel processing they offer will soon be available at ANC.
"We're very excited about it because we, for 20 years, have had one of the country's few and Arkansas' only degrees in steel technology," Dr. James Shemwell said. "So this new partnership will just take our capacity to provide steel training to the next level, a global level."
President of the college Dr. James Shemwell said the courses will be available in 2019, making ANC the only other location in the world to offer this type of specialized training.
Dr. Shemwell believes the relationship ANC forged with SMS Group while working to provide training for Big River Steel's start up, helped in the discussions of getting this specialized training to Blytheville.
Dr. Shemwell said initially they plan to use instructors from Germany to teach the courses, whether in the classroom or through holographic technology.
As they progress, Dr. Shemwell said ANC's current engineers will deliver some of the course training as well.
