RANDOLPH COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The construction on the Randolph County jail expansion is set to begin this summer.
The county will begin taking bids for work on the expansion next Wednesday.
County Judge David Jansen said planning for the project has been going on for nearly two years.
The expansion will not only provide more space for prisoners, it will also allow the jail to begin housing female prisoners.
Jansen said housing the female prisoners will save the county money.
"We house our females in other facilities, Piggott or whatever," he said. "We spend lots of dollars driving back and forth, picking them up taking them to court, taking them back."
Jansen said by June, work on a concrete foundation and installation of a new generator should be complete.
He said if weather allows, the project could be complete within a year.
