County works to get Text to 911 this fall

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Officials with the Lawrence County 911 Center are hoping to have Text to 911 in the county soon.

Through programs like RAVE, the county has had an expansion of their cell phone towers.

County Judge John Thomison said the expansion of towers is allowing the 911 center to expand their offerings to citizens. The Text to 911 system allows people to send a text to 911 using their cell phone, according to the FCC.

"It is just very gratifying and plus you know you're providing what your people need." he said.  "You're providing a needed service, but also at the same time, you're proud of the people that do it."

Thomison said the service is one way the county is being proactive to problems.

"Quite a few programs that weren't available before are offered," he said.  "Everything should be up and functioning by September, we hope."
