GOSNELL, AR (KAIT) -

The city of Gosnell has decided not to contract out its garbage services, with garbage collection being done by the city.

Council members agreed June 12 not to do the contracting after the city's garbage truck broke down earlier this year.

They considered contracting it out, but decided not to do so.

Earlier this year, the city was hit with two expensive necessities at the same time.

Their garbage truck recently broke down temporarily, delaying their trash pickup.

And, the fire truck is needing a replacement.

So, the city is discussing the option of contracting the garbage out instead of buying another truck.

City Clerk Kathleen Hunt-Cross said this would save the city about $100,000 per year.

“We can focus more on buying us a fire truck because the fire truck is very necessary and we have to have that,” Hunt-Cross said. “We can contract the garbage out.”

Hunt-Cross said they hate it for the three jobs that would be cut, but she said they have to be fiscally responsible.

The city is in the process of creating a bid package now to advertise the contract.
