ATLANTA, Ga. (4/6/18) – The Arkansas State baseball squad fell behind early as Georgia State swatted four home runs to send the Red Wolves to a 12-3 loss in the series opener Friday night at the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
A-State (11-14, 3-7 SBC) fell behind 11-1 after six innings as the Panthers (14-15, 3-6 SBC) belted four home run balls, including one from right fielder Brandon Bell, who went 5-for-5 and hit for the cycle. Bell also scored three runs and drove in three runs as GSU got 11 of its 14 hits from its top four hitters. Hunter Gaddis picked up the win for Georgia State after he allowed two runs in seven innings.
Bradey Welsh took the loss for A-State after allowing eight runs in four innings. The Red Wolves' bullpen of Chase Nix, Carter Holt, and Payton Lannon combined to allow four runs with Holt tossing a perfect seventh inning. Grant Hawkins led the team at the plate with three hits and a RBI.
Georgia State opened the scoring with a pair a RBI hits with two outs from the bottom of the order in the bottom of the second inning. Romero Greer doubled home the first run before Kalen Puckett singled home Greer. However, Kyle MacDonald singled home Hawkins, who doubled earlier in the top of the third, to cut the A-State deficit in half at 2-1.
The Panthers scored two more runs in the bottom half of the third with back-to-back homers from Justin Jones and Nick Gatewood before pushing across another four runs in the fourth to take an 8-1 advantage. Gatewood swatted his second homer of the game in the four-run fourth. Bell launched a three-run homer in the sixth to make the score 11-1.
A-State added runs in the seventh and ninth innings, while Georgia State scored one in the eighth when Bell tripled to complete the cycle and came home on a RBI fielder's choice to make it 12-3.
