JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A local family has donated funds to create the first endowed scholarship for the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University.

This $50,000 endowed scholarship will go toward helping a student throughout their medical education.

This is the first endowed scholarship for NYITCOM at A-State and it's from a local family.

The family of Gregory William Berner, who recently passed away from a very rare brain disorder, donated funds and named the scholarship after him, The Gregory William Berner Endowed Scholarship.

Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Shane Speights, said any second-year medical student within the college will be able to apply.

"As you would imagine, medical school is expensive," Dr. Speights said. "So, any little help like this is greatly beneficial to the student."

Dr. Speights said they are still working on what the application process will look like.

There will be certain criteria the family sets forth that students will have to meet.

Speights said the scholarship will be awarded at the next white coat ceremony this August.
