BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) - A local detective discussed a growing concern at Brookland Middle School Monday night.
Brookland School District's PTO hosted Family Tech Talk Night where parents learned about online safety.
Jonesboro Police Department Detective Earnest Ward spoke to a cafeteria full of curious parents.
Ward has spent the past 11 years investigating internet crimes against children.
"Kids are getting online, they have no filter and think it's okay to say anything and talk to anyone," Ward said. "That's a problem we are seeing."
The veteran detective spent time speaking with children about internet safety then spent an hour exclusively with their parents to educate them on how to properly monitor their child's internet devices.
At the end of the night, parents left trusting Ward and his advice to keep their children safe while surfing the net.
"I work full time and I don't know everything there is to know about internet safety, so I know the police know a lot more about what to look for and how to track it, and so that's why I think it's really important to take the time tonight and come out and hear about it," Nikki Turner, a parent said.
Ward said ears are the most vital tool for parents to use to keep track of what their children are doing online.
