Red Wolves post strong performances in split weekend

Auburn, AL (A-State) – The Arkansas State track and field teams saw athletes split up for two different meets and both groups came away with strong performances at the Tiger Track Classic and Triton Invitational.

Jaylen Bacon made his season debut in the 100-meter dash and did not disappoint. He posted a time of 10.09 seconds to win the event at the Tiger Track Classic. The time ranks him atop the Sun Belt Conference, second in the NCAA West Region and fourth overall nationally. Elijah Ross placed fifth in the race at 10.34 seconds, a time that ranks him fourth in the Sun Belt and 10th in the NCAA West Region.

Bacon finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.77 seconds, a season best that ranks him atop the Sun Belt leaderboard and 12th in the NCAA West Region. Seth Waters added a second individual champion on the track as he won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:57.94.

The Red Wolves had the top two finishers in the decathlon. Hayden Hampton totaled 6,849 points for the top spot while Coleton Clifft was second with 6,411 points. Hampton was the top finisher in shot put (12.75m/41-10.00), 110-meter hurdles (15.00), discus throw (41.91m/137-06) and javelin throw (48.05m/160-03). Clifft was the top finisher among decathlon entrants in 100-meter (10.96) and long jump (6.98m/22-11.00).

Caitland Smith posted two top-five program marks in the short sprints at the Tiger Track Classic. She placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.86 seconds, a time that ranks fourth in program history. She clocked a time of 11.56 seconds in the 100-meter dash to place fourth, a time that also ranks fourth in program history. Darragh May finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, but her time of 13.80 seconds ranks her fifth in program history.

Out in San Deigo at the Triton Invitational, Babette Vandeput had the standout performance for the Red Wolves. She posted a discus throw of 51.29m (168-3) to place 11th overall, but the throw ranks her fourth in program history. Cristian Ravar Ladislau finished third in the hammer throw at 66.50m (218-2) while Calea Carr was third in the women’s hammer throw at 59.52m (195-3).

The A-State Track & Field teams return to action next weekend with the annual home outdoor meet. The Red Wolves Open is set for April 20-21 at the A-State Track & Field Complex.
