Man taken into custody by Jonesboro SWAT appears in court

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A man was arrested on domestic battery charges on Sunday. On Tuesday, he appeared in court for the first time.

The Jonesboro Police Department SWAT team responded to a domestic disturbance call on the 200-block of Puryear Street.

According to a news release, a witness told police they saw a man attack a woman and drag her inside the house.

Police were able to identify the man as 31-year-old William Neal Toney.

When officers went to the door no one answered, but they began getting text messages from the people inside the house.

The messages said that the suspect was armed possibly with a gun and wouldn't let anyone leave the home.

SWAT team members and the Crisis Negotiation Team were called to assist. However, before the teams were implemented Toney surrendered to police.

The woman, according to court documents, sustained injuries to her face, neck, and the back of her head.

Police say the entire incident was witnessed by children inside the residence.

Toney appeared in court Tuesday and his bond was set at $250,000.

He was sentenced to one year in jail for revocation of probation.

In addition, Toney now faces charges of third-degree domestic battery, third offense, four counts of false imprisonment, and assault on a family or household member. No-contact orders were issued for all the victims.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 25.
