2.3 earthquake detected near Caruthersville

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - According to the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, a 2.3-magnitude earthquake was detected Saturday in southeast Missouri.

Officials said in a report that the earthquake happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, five miles southwest of Caruthersville or six miles east, northeast of Steele.

Typically, an earthquake of that magnitude is not detected by human beings, officials have said in the past.
