JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - "Color Me DARE" kicked off Saturday morning at Joe Mack Campbell Park in Jonesboro.

A 2-mile color run took place to help raise funds for the Jonesboro Police Department's DARE program.

JPD and DARE officer, Corporal Shay Racy said the DARE program is a vital part of keeping our future generations safe and on the right track.

"It's a program where we teach kids to stay off drugs and how to make good decisions and resist violence," Racy said.

They have expanded the program to include dealing with stressful situations, communication, internet safety and the dangers of other illicit drugs like heroin, marijuana, and cocaine.

The program impacts around 1,200 kids a year and operates solely on the support of the community.

About 140 people participated in the Color Run this year.
