(KAIT) - A new survey of likely Republican party primary voters in Arkansas shows that Governor Asa Hutchinson has a nearly two-to-one lead over challenger Jan Morgan.
The latest Talk Business & Politics-Hendrix College Poll of 676 GOP voters puts Gov. Hutchinson in the lead.
The question: "If the Republican primary election for Governor was being held today and the candidates were Jan Morgan and Governor Asa Hutchinson, for whom would you vote?"
The results showed 30.5 percent voted for Morgan, while 57.5 percent said Gov. Hutchinson would get their vote. Twelve percent of those polled didn't know.
Dr. Jay Barth, professor of political science at Hendrix College, says President Donald Trump voters will be crucial.
"If they do turn out, which Asa Hutchinson, unquestionably I think is going to win this primary, I think if those voters turn out in large numbers, Morgan could, you know maybe, get into the low 40s," Dr. Barth said.
Dr. Barth helped craft and analyze the poll.
The poll was conducted on April 17-19 and has a margin of error of plus/minus 3.8 percent.
