JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The city of Jonesboro is branching out with the help of some students and the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

The city kicked off its Arbor Day celebration Thursday at the Southside Softball Complex, 5003 Stadium Blvd.

Roy Ockert, on behalf of Mayor Harold Perrin, delivered the event’s proclamation.

About 140 students from Fox Meadow Elementary School attended the event where they learned about the importance of planting and caring for trees.

To help put the lesson into action, Thomas Lindsey of the AFC donated hundreds of seedlings to the students.

Two trees were also planted in honor of the late Mayor Hubert Brodell.
