JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Investigators say for five years, a law firm’s office manager stole thousands of dollars from the company and its clients.

Betheny Brooke Barnes, 39, of Jonesboro appeared Monday before Craighead County District Judge David Boling who found probable cause to charge her with second-degree forgery and theft of $25,000 or more-all others.

According to court documents, Barnes worked as an office manager at a local law firm.

Starting in January 2013, she began keeping cash payments for client’s rent house.

The probable cause affidavit stated documents obtained during the investigation showed she forged bank statements to cover up the missing money.

“The documents show Betheny Barnes began transferring money from other clients’ accounts and the law firm into the victim’s account to replace the money that was taken,” the affidavit stated. “Betheny Barnes transferred in excess of $25,000.”

Barnes is currently free on a $2,500 temporary bond awaiting a June 29 appearance in circuit court.
