(KAIT) - Pregnancy can cause many changes to a woman's body and that also can include vision issues.
New medication and technology make it possible for women to live longer, but that also comes with more issues to deal with when it comes to eye health such as cataracts and glaucoma.
Sometimes the diagnosis can even worse when pregnancy is involved. Dr. Margaret Carter, an optometrist, said she frequently sees macular degeneration in a woman as life expectancy increases.
"A lot of things are time sensitive now for just a young healthy woman. If you don't have diabetes, high blood pressure, an every two to three-year exam. But we screen people with diabetes which can get worse during pregnancy. So, we see those people every year," said Dr. Carter.
She also mentioned a spot where a patient can't see out of called a scotoma. It will travel to the side over a 20 minute period and become waves. It's often accompanied by a migraine or a headache afterward.
Dr. Carter said it's not uncommon for vision to change while a woman is pregnant, sometimes they can even become nearsighted. It's often triggered by factors like hormones.
She recommended if anyone notices any vision changes, they should immediately check with an optometrist. Doctors said many times vision changes can be an easy fix.
