TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) - Police arrested a Level 4 sex offender Thursday accused of groping a girl while she slept.
The months-long investigation began on Dec. 27, 2017, when the child's mother called the Trumann Police Department to report 46-year-old Michael Lewis Butler of Jonesboro had sexually assaulted her daughter.
In an interview with an Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children detective, the child told investigators Lewis put his hands in her pants on at least two occasions.
The child told investigators the first incident happened at the end of September at a home in Trumann.
The child claimed she awoke to find Butler "laying beside her with his hand down her pants and under her panties rubbing her private area."
The second incident happened during the first week of October, according to a police report. Again, the child claimed she awoke to find Butler "rubbing on her frontal crotch area."
During an interview with police, Butler claimed he knew about the allegations and said the "victim had changed her story numerous times." He also reportedly told detectives the child's mother was mad at him over something he posted on her Facebook page.
On Jan. 26, a judge found probable cause to charge Butler with second-degree sexual assault and issued a warrant for his arrest.
He was taken into custody on Thursday, May 3, and placed into the Poinsett County Detention Center.
According to court documents, Butler pleaded guilty in 2003 to second-degree sexual assault and received a 120-month suspended imposition of sentence. He was required to register as a Level 4 sex offender which, according to the Arkansas Crime Information Center, is considered a "sexually violent predator."
