Jonesboro, AR (A-State) – The Arkansas State baseball team dropped the series finale to Georgia Southern 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

Casey Vaughan drove in the first run of the game, a two-out single in the bottom of the third inning, to put A-State (18-29, 9-18 SBC) up 1-0 early on, but the Eagles answered with four runs in the sixth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The Red Wolves threatened Georgia Southern with a big inning in the first when it loaded the bases with one out, but failed push across a run after a line out and a popup got the Eagles (27-23, 16-10) out of the inning unharmed.

Vaughan came through for A-State in the third inning with his fifth RBI of the weekend with a single through the left side that scored Blake Wynn, but the Red Wolves again could not break the inning open and left two on at the end of the frame.

The Eagles did all of their damage in the sixth inning after Austin Thompson ripped a two-run  double down the third-base line off Tanner Kirby, who had just entered the game in relief of Carter Holt. Tyler Martin followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield, while Christian Avant drove in the final run of the inning with a double into left centerfield.

Holt was effective through the game’s first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth when he issued a leadoff walk, followed by a double and another walk before giving way to Kirby. Coulton Lee entered the game in the seventh pitched three shutout innings to close out the game.

A-State will close out its 2018 home schedule Tuesday evening when it hosts Ole Miss. First pitch at Tomlinson Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
