POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) -

Officials with the city of Pocahontas spent their Monday continuing to work on improving the look of the downtown area.

Sidewalk renovations are taking place near City Hall and The Downtown Playhouse.

Pocahontas Mayor Kary Story said it's been decades since these sidewalks have been worked on.

He said it's particularly important that downtown sidewalks are in good shape.

"We've been working for the last three years to try to improve our downtown and bring people back to downtown," Story said.

Story added the sidewalks near the playhouse see plenty of foot traffic when there is a show.

"They'll have three or four shows here a year that run six to eight weeks and we see both of these parking lots filled up with upwards of 200 cars," he said. "We're just trying to improve the sidewalk so that people can access the playhouse better and downtown area."

Parts of several streets in that area will remain closed to through traffic as work continues.

Mayor Story expects the sidewalks to complete by the Saturday, May 19.
